A well-known Christmas carol asks the question: “What child is this who, laid to rest on Mary’s lap, is sleeping?” If someone were to ask you to explain who Jesus is, what would you say? Before you dismiss that question too quickly as unlikely to ever actually happen, please reconsider. We often assume that the vast majority of people believe in Jesus. Yet only one third of the world’s population is Christian. Closer to home, in the U.S. an increasing number of people are being raised without any religious faith, Christian or otherwise. So at some point, you will probably be asked questions such as: “Why are you religious?” “Why Christianity?” and “What makes Jesus different from any other religious leader?” How will you respond? Under the theme “What Child is This?”, Pastor Alan will take us through an examination of how believers have answered that question through the centuries, beginning with the testimony of a man named Simeon.
