A driver two lanes over lost control of his car and spun around on the freeway. As his car careened toward mine, our terror-filled eyes met for a split second. I said out loud, “God, save my dad,” and expected to see Jesus the next moment. My dad was not in the car with me, but he did not realize that he was saved by grace yet, and my deepest desire flew right out of my mouth. Miraculously, our cars did not collide. I’ve thought often of that miracle, and the cry of my heart that the Lord would gently bring my father to know and love Him.Â
We hear the cry of Jesus’ heart from the cross this week, “Dear woman, here is your son.” With some of His last words, Jesus commends His mother’s care to His beloved disciple, John. Love manifests itself in tremendous and touching ways. None more so than Jesus dying on the cross for His mother, His disciples, a world that didn’t know Him yet, our families, you, me. I pray that our thoughts, and not only our perceived last thoughts, would spring from deep love, from the place our love intertwines with God’s everlasting love.Â
Dad came to know Jesus many years after that near accident. I learned to trust God and be persistent in prayer in the meantime. On this very topic, there is a beautiful and powerful promise tucked in our Scripture readings this weekend. “And God is faithful.” Absolutely. Think on His faithfulness to you, and let the deep desire of your heart fly to Him. He will listen. He will act. God is faithful. ~Tracy
