The Grand Canyon was spectacular last weekend. I said to my friends, “I can’t believe this was made by the Colorado River. It had to be the hand of God sculpting the rock with mighty hands. There’s nowhere on earth like this.” They both proceeded to tell me of other places made by rivers that were similar to the Canyon. Even gazing into that Wonder of the World, they couldn’t see God as the Creator. I felt like they didn’t understand what I was trying to say. After all, if I can’t persuade someone to admit God is Creator at the edge of the Grand Canyon, my evangelism skills must be lacking. I felt like I failed at the moment, but my feelings were not based on God’s truth.
God’s truth says people are saved by grace, not by my words, not by the grandest canyon. The Word also says, “Faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.” (Romans 10:17) We are called to share our faith, even if it meets with rejection. We can plant seeds of faith for God to tend and we can water seeds that are sprouting. But, the growth of faith is beyond our responsibility. It is God’s.
Isaiah says in 40:28, “Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding.” Christians know we can point to the Creator, but we can’t make someone see Him. We can share God’s truth and our friends may not understand. Yet we trust and pray the Spirit will help them understand in His time. We can keep on pointing and sharing and loving. Our everlasting, never-weary God takes care of the rest. ~Tracy
